How to Make Your Braids Last Longer: A Simple Night-Time Routine
You invested time and money in your braids, so let's keep them looking fresh for as long as possible. The secret isn't fancy products. It's what you do every night before bed.
1. Always cover your hair
Cotton pillowcases pull moisture from your hair and rub against your braids, which causes frizz. A satin bonnet or scarf (or a satin pillowcase) keeps your braids smooth, neat and shiny. This one habit makes the biggest difference.
2. Keep your scalp happy, lightly
If your scalp feels dry or itchy, use a small amount of a light scalp oil on your parts. A little goes a long way. Too much product builds up and attracts lint.
3. Tie up long braids
Loosely gather long braids into a low bun or a big plait before bed so they don't tangle. Keep it loose. Tight updos night after night pull on your edges.
4. Wash gently, and dry completely
When you wash, focus on your scalp, squeeze rather than rub, and make sure your braids dry all the way through. Braids left damp can start to smell and can lead to buildup.
5. Know when it's time
Most braid styles look their best for about 4 to 6 weeks. Keeping them in much longer can lead to matting and breakage at the roots, so give your hair a break and a good wash between styles.
