Knotless Braids vs Box Braids: What's the Difference?

Neat knotless box braids with a gold cuff

It's one of the questions we hear most at the studio: "Should I get knotless or box braids?" Both look beautiful, both protect your natural hair, and both can be done in any length or size. The difference is in how each braid starts.

Box braids start with a knot

With traditional box braids, the extension hair is looped around your own hair at the root, creating a small knot. That knot is what makes the braid secure from day one.

  • Very sturdy from the start
  • A slightly fuller look at the root
  • Can feel tighter for the first few days

Knotless braids start with your own hair

With knotless braids, we begin each braid using only your natural hair, then feed in the extension hair little by little as we go. There's no knot at the base.

  • Less tension on your scalp and edges
  • Lies flatter and looks more natural at the root
  • Lighter, and comfortable to wear right away
  • Usually takes a little longer to install

So which one is right for you?

If your scalp is sensitive, your edges need some love, or you want a soft, natural finish, knotless is usually the way to go. If you love a classic, full look, box braids are still a beautiful choice.

Either way, the most important thing is a braider who never pulls too tight. Your braids should feel snug, never painful.
